Description
Antiseptics are chemical agents applied to the skin to reduce the microbial count and the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs). Povidone Iodine have been both as antiseptics and skin disinfectant. Povidone-iodine solution have demonstrated more rapid kill (seconds to minutes) of S. aureus and M. chelonae. It penetrates the cell wall of microorganism quickly. Povidone iodine is a potent bactericidal agent having a broad spectrum of action. It is also active against a wide range of enveloped and nonenveloped viruses. Isopropyl alcohol is hydrophilic alcohol that likely causes membrane damage and denatures proteins needed for microbial metabolism and growth.
